Nursing homes and eldercare in Phuket
Phuket combines international-standard healthcare (Bangkok Hospital Phuket, Bumrungrad's Phuket outpost, Siriroj International Hospital) with a tropical-island lifestyle. Nursing homes and rehabilitation centres here typically cater to expats and international medical tourists, with staff trained in English, Chinese, Russian, and Scandinavian languages. Costs are higher than Chiang Mai or Hua Hin but still 40-60% below Australia/Europe equivalents.

Notes for international families
Licensing and quality assurance
Thai eldercare facilities operating as commercial businesses must hold a licence from the Department of Health Service Support (กรมสนับสนุนบริการสุขภาพ / HSS) under the Establishments for Health Act B.E. 2559 (2016). Always ask to see the original licence before signing a contract.
Insurance and payment
Most private eldercare facilities in Phuket accept international insurance for medical services (physiotherapy, doctor visits, hospital transfers) but not for the room-and-board portion. Confirm direct billing arrangements before admission. Cigna, Aetna, Bupa, AXA, Allianz, and Pacific Cross are commonly accepted at major private hospitals.
Visa considerations
Long-term care residents typically hold a Non-Immigrant O (Retirement) or Non-Immigrant O-A visa. The Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa introduced in 2022 also includes a "Wealthy Pensioner" category. Immigration requirements are separate from care arrangements — consult a Thai immigration lawyer or your embassy.
Contract clauses to review
Ensure the residence contract specifies annual rate cap, cancellation notice period, hospital transfer responsibility, medication policy, family visitation hours, and end-of-contract exit conditions. Ask for an English translation for signing.
